Subtitle ROCK

95% of Assassin's Creed Odyssey players kept subtitles on, Ubisoft have revealed, and 50% of The Division 2 players are currently playing with them on too. These surprising statistics and more come from a wee tweetblast this week confirming that yes, subtitles are hugely desirable even in murdergames. Even as someone who often plays with subs on, I'm surprised by the numbers shared by David Tisserand, an accessibility project manager and user research fella at Ubisoft Montreal. Subs: they are good. Subs in video games: they could be better. Conclusion: more and better subs, video games, please and thank you.

David Tisserand posted a wee Twitter thread on Tuesday as a follow-up to earlier Ubi information-sharing. In 2018, the company said around 60% of Asscreed Oranges players turned the subtitles on. Now he has many more numbers to share about newer games.

In Far Cry: New Dawn, where the subtitles are on by default, around 97% of players didn't turn them off. That doesn't mean 97% of folks made a decision to use subtitles, but it's still impressive. New Dawn is a good demonstration of Ubisoft's modern subtitle options too, including backgrounds for text, directional subtitles pointing out important sounds, and text sizes. It's good.

Its follow-up, Asscreed Oddo, also had subs on by default. Tisserand says 95% kept them on. (Decade-old hot take: Italian voices with subtitles is the best way to play the whole Ezio saga of Assassin's Creed 2.)

Towards the less-storyish and more-murdersome end of the spectrum, The Division 2 has subtitles off by default but Tisserand claims 75% of players have turned them at least once. 50% had them on at the time he tweeted the tweet.

I do wish Tisserand had said more about the source and accuracy of all these numbers, but the overall picture seems clear: many people will use subtitles. It's unfortunate that accessibility features so often need to be sold as a good idea from a business perspective, but if that helps, hey, look publishers, statistics.

While I have a touch of tinnitus in my old age, I don't strictly need subtitles myself. But I live on a busy road, I'm often gabbing on Discord, I may have music or the telly or radio on, my phone is bing-bonging, my attention wanders, I can't believe the character said something so stupid and need to double-check... I like having them.

The sixth instalment of the Guitar Hero franchise has been described as a 'return to basics' (after the recent commercial under-performance of Guitar Hero 5), focusing more on guitar-centred, classic rock and roll. Artists such as Queen and Black Sabbath have so far been confirmed, along with celebrity cameos by Metalica's Lars Ulrich and Kiss' Gene Simmons.

IntroductionThis case history focuses on the construction of a crucial thin rock layer over geosynthetics and the solution encountered during the first construction phase of an RCRA Subtitle C embankment cover system at a hazardous and radioactive disposal site. The top and 5:1 sideslopes of the cover system were constructed with a cap consisting of geosynthetics and native rock products. The process included the selection and testing of an appropriate geotextile and geomembrane system and the placement of a thin, 15.24cm- (6in.)-thick filter rock cover layer placed directly over the required geosynthetics followed by the placement of further rock layers. The construction of this 15.24cm filter rock layer was successfully addressed by the project team. This case history specifies how the contractors successfully placed this thin filter rock system using a portable conveyor device while protecting the geosynthetics.

Following waste placement the MWE was covered by a native clay, rock, and geosynthetics system shown in Figure 2. The native clay system is a 30.48cm- (1ft)-thick temporary cover layer and a minimum 60.96cm- (2ft)-thick 5 10-8cm/sec radon barrier layer designed to contain the radon gas byproduct from the radioactive waste decay. The RCRA required geomembrane, a 60-mil textured double-sided HDPE liner, was placed over the radon barrier followed by a 12oz nonwoven geotextile placed for drainage and cushion. (EnergySolutions, 2003).

The permitted design then required a filter and erosion rock cover system atop the geosynthetic materials. The rock is composed of, in placement sequence, a minimum 15.24cm (6in.) of type-B filter rock, 30.48cm (1ft) of sacrificial soil, 15.24 cm (6in.) of type-A filter rock, and a final 45.72cm (1.5ft) of type-A riprap rock on the sideslope and 45.72cm (1.5ft) of type-B riprap rock on the top slope.

The B filter 15.24cm (6in.) thickness placement challenge was given to the contractor with a charge to propose a placement solution. The solution proposed and then successfully executed in 2012 on the 3A cell and in 2013 on the 2A cell involved a portable conveyor system that could accurately place the small rock to the design thickness at more than 21m (70ft) away while navigating the 5:1 slope and the distances.

Other important insights from the B filter placement operation include that the 2012 B filter hauling operation by loaders was replaced in 2013 by the trackhoe and haul trucks by the contractor to minimize spillage and increase speed of placement. While spillage on the sacrificial soil was easily cleaned, the contractor found that, due to access issues, hauling B filter over the unfinished radon barrier in 2012 was less productive when they had to hand remove rocks from the radon barrier because of tight CQA/QC specifications.

The objective of this study is to assess horizontal drilling as an alternative to pilot tunneling in geological investigation prior to the design and construction of highway tunnels and to identify means to increase the penetration capability and accuracy and decrease the cost of horizontal drilling. This volume assesses the horizontal penetration capabilities of available drilling equipment. The drilling of horizontal holes to a maximum length of 5000 ft. (1524 m) is found to be technically feasible and to offer an order of magnitude cost reduction over pilot tunneling. Limitation present day equipment and techniques are identified and means to overcome these limitations are indicated. This is the first of three volumes. Volume II is published as FHWA-RD-75-96, subtitle: Estimating Manual for Time and Cost Requirements. Volume III is published as FHWA-RD-75-97, subtitle: A Development Plan to Extent Penetration Capability, Increase Accuracy, and Reduce Costs. /FHWA/

Priority's Rock of the '90s, Vol. 1: Rock from the Revolution is an odd collection. First of all, disregard the subtitle -- it's hard to imagine anyone calling Dada or the Goo Goo Dolls "revolutionary," let alone superstar sideprojects like the Hindu Love Gods or Tin Machine. Take it as a sampler of alternative rock from the late '80s and early '90s. Granted, it isn't a great collection -- Public Image Limited and Dada are represented by sub-par tracks, Concrete Blonde's "Bloodletting" should have been "Joey" and it's hard to see why Bowie' Tin Machine or the REM-Warren Zevon busman's holiday Hindu Love Gods were even allowed near this thing. Disregard those songs, and you have good songs from three '80s indie-rock survivors -- the Replacements ("Merry Go Round"), Bob Mould ("It's Too Late") and Redd Kross ("Annie's Gone") -- plus the Goo Goo Dolls' greatest song, "We Are the Normal," which is the closest they ever came to capturing Paul Westerberg's sloppy genius. 041b061a72
